Folk Alley - Piano in folk music?

Question Piano in folk music?

When I heard this song, I thought "nice ballad", however I couldn't help but think the piano was mis-placed among a group of folk songs. Surely folk music is reliant on its radically rough and ready earthiness, whereas a piano evokes images of wealth and status. Or am I wrong? What do you think?

Cool 88-string guitar

I think a song played on a three thousand dollar guitar by a college grad evokes about as much earthiness as a song played on a hand-me-down piano. Or, as the brilliant Tom Lehrer once remarked, "think of it as an 88-string guitar!"

Default folk

Stephen Foster not "folk" music? A piano -- which has been the focus of so many gatherings of people singing together as a community -- not a "folk" instrument? Seems to be easy questions to answer.
