 Punch Brothers, Chris Thile’s latest musical venture, has been described as bluegrass instrumentation and spontaneity within the limits of modern classical. Formed in 2006, Thile and Gabe Witcher (fiddle), Noam Pikelny (banjo), Chris Eldridge (guitar), and Greg Garrison (bass) got together one night just to drown their sorrows with steak and wine. But after jamming together, the group instantly clicked over failed relationships, musical style and the direction each of their lives was going. Thus, Punch Brothers was born.
The gem of their first album, Punch, is a four-part, forty minute suite called “The Blind Leaving the Blind,” written by Thile about his 2004 divorce. They premiered the suite at Carnegie Hall in March of 2007 to wild acclaim. The songs on the rest of the album are a far cry from the quiet, safe, newgrassy sounds so prevalent on Nickel Creek records. Songs include the rollicking “Punch Bowl,” “Sometimes,” and the gentle and graceful “It’ll Happen.”
