 Trio Nickel Creek first started performing together at a San Diego, California Shakey's Pizza Palace when Chris Thile (mandolin) and Sara Watkins (fiddle) were only 8 years old. Sara's older brother, Sean (guitar), was 12. Their bluegrass sound began as something more traditional, but as they matured, so did their music with Chris stretching the boundaries of the mandolin with his virtuosic playing and Sean leaning towards a more folk/rock approach that included working with musicians like Toad the Wet Sprocket's Glen Phillips. Sara, meanwhile, traveled as part of Darol Anger's Republic of Strings. Together, Nickel Creek's second album, This Side, won a Grammy in 2003 for Best Contemporary Folk Album with the title single racing up the Country charts. Although their follow-up CD, 2005's Why Should the Fire Die?, hit #1 on Billboard's Independent Albums chart, the solo work of the individual band members continued to pull them in separate directions and they announced they would be taking an indefinite hiatus at the end of their 2007 tour.
