Folk Spokes

In every community, there are devoted people behind the scenes helping to make the folk music scene vibrant, thriving by keeping the wheels rolling. Whether it's a longtime volunteer at a folk club or house concert series, a festival or venue director, a local folk radio host, or a writer who reviews CDs or concerts - one common thread is that these people love the music. They are passionate about serving artists and fans and making sure the folk scene in their community is strong and active.

We chose the name Folk Spokes from listener submissions for Folk Alley's new feature because spokes support wheels while connecting an unbroken circle of the best of musical traditions. Folk Spokes is an opportunity for you to nominate the unsung individuals (or spokes) in your community and to give them a well-deserved moment in the spotlight.

Vic & Reba Heyman

Singer/songwriter, Kate McDonnell of Slingerlands, New York, nominates Vic & Reba Heyman from Rockville, Maryland, by saying, "These two can't be separated. They are the most wonderful, generous, forgiving people you'd ever want to know as a touring musician. They have saved me from several Hells, and have helped me to put out some CDs - [as well as helping many other artists] heard on Folk Alley. And [these artists] are who they are thanks to the generosity of people like Vic & Reba."

That would have been me.:-) I'm thrilled Vic and Reba were nominated. I should have thought of it myself.

I consider myself so lucky to live near them. They've brought such talented people into the area. I know they help folkies and have for years. They do some much for so many folk fests all over the country.

I have seen them volunteering too, seating people at our annual WFMA concerts. They are truly wonderful, kind, friendly, caring people.

Vic & Reba Heyman seem to be everywhere!
I've observed Vic & Reba give and give selflessly to artists at the Kerrville Folk Festival's New Folk competition, and the nicest thing I've noticed, besides their wonderful hospitality and encouraging spirit, is that they seem to genuinely enjoy listening to all the new music being presented! You will usually find them front row, center wherever they are..

Another folk music lover sent me a picture of Vic & Reba and recommended that I seek them out at Kerrville to say hello for her and to get to know them because they are good people. So, when Reba walked up to the table where I was volunteering, I knew right away who she was, and her smile is infectious!
