FolkAlley.com is a listener supported 24-hour,
online music service featuring folk, traditional, Americana,
Celtic, singer/songwriter, world, and acoustic music. It was
launched in September 2003 and is produced by WKSU-FM in Kent,
Ohio. Along with the hosted music stream and real-time playlist,
the web site also offers a blog, music news, folk links, information
on musicians, new releases, exclusive artist interviews, and
more. WKSU is a service of Kent State University, host of
the Kent State
Folk Festival, the nation’s second longest folk
music festival on a college campus.
We require all listeners to register in order
to better serve those using the service by building direct
lines of communication. There is no charge for registration.
All registrants are required to provide an
e-mail address and a password. We also request that you provide
your name and location (i.e., city and country).

Here are some step-by-step instructions, if
you are having trouble listening:
1. The first thing that you need to do is register,
creating a username and a password.
2. Then, you need to make sure you are logged into the site
using your username and password. When you do this, a list
of streaming links will appear at the top left corner of most
of the pages. There are links for RealPlayer, Windows Media
Player, MP3, and aacPlus.
The MP3 streams and the 64 kbps aacPlus stream require a broadband
cable modem or DSL connection, but the RealPlayer, Windows
Media and 32 kbps aacPlus links will work on either a dial-up
or broadband connection.
3. Depending upon what player software you have installed
(and your connection speed), pick one of the links. If you
have a relatively new Windows-based computer, you probably
already have the Windows Media player on it. If not, free
media player downloads are available here:
- Windows
Media Player
- RealPlayer
For MP3, you can use:
- Winamp on Windows PCs.
- iTunes on Mac
or Windows PCs.
The aacPlus streams, which provide excellent sound quality
at very low bit rates, are supported by:
- Winamp version 5.08
or higher on Windows PCs.
- VLC on Mac, Linux/Unix,
and Windows PCs.
Follow the directions found on each player’s download
site to install the respective player.

Folk Alley’s small staff receives hundreds
of CDs each month. We regret that we are not able to offer
notification on arrival or personal comments on submitted
CDs. Review CDs will not be returned without sufficient postage.
We are proud of our playlist, but also realize
that, especially with the breadth of the folk music genre,
we could be missing out on some very good artists. We receive
many more requests than we can accommodate, but keep listening!
You may hear that favorite artist of yours! Please E-mail
requests and suggestions to . We appreciate
your input!
It may be that the artist’s music doesn’t
fit our format. With the amount of quality material and number
of excellent artists in the world of folk music, it may be
that we just don’t know about a particular group or
individual singer and/or songwriter. Or the artist may already
be in rotation. Suggestions are always appreciated! Please
E-mail requests to .
Click though song titles in the Folk Alley
playlist and you will find a page with additional information
on artists and links to buy the CD, if available, directly
from Amazon.com. Folk Alley receives a portion of proceeds
from most purchases made through these links. If you are interested
in establishing an affiliate relationship with Folk Alley,
contact Linda Fahey.
We are always looking to expand the wealth
of folk music-related information on Folk Alley, and you may
send your suggestions to .
